Conservation Commission
The mission of the Town of Thornton Conservation Commission (KG 8-12-20 revision date) is to protect the natural and watershed resources of Thornton and conserve them for future generations pursuant to NH RSA 36-A:1. The Commission works with partners and the community to advocate for the natural resources of Thornton and protect these resources for the public benefit of all.
The Commission achieves the mission by:
- Guiding growth and change in Thornton to maintain healthy ecosystems in collaboration with other town commissions and boards;
- Developing and maintaining an inventory of natural resources to guide the protection, development and/or better utilization of all natural areas;
- Protecting water resources by acting as the local agent for NH Department of Environmental Services wetland permit applications;
- Providing guidance to residents on sustainable conservation practices for the benefits of health, recreation, education, and the economy;
- Keeping an index of all open space and natural, aesthetic or ecological areas within the town, as the case may be, with the plan of obtaining information pertinent to proper utilization of such areas, including state or federal owned lands; and
- Providing resources on the public lands in the town to the public.
The Thornton Conservation Commission members are appointed by the Board of Selectmen for 3 year terms.
